ASAE Announces Winner of Hancor Soil and Water Award
Findlay, Ohio, Aug. 4, 2004 — The Interim Director of the Iowa State Water Resources Institute received the 2004 Hancor Soil and Water Engineering Award at the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) international meeting.
Stewart Melvin, P.E., ASAE Fellow, who is also a professor at Iowa State University, was honored for his educational leadership and his outstanding research and extensive involvement in soil, water and waste management.
Melvin teaches agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State, where he was head of the department from 1995-2001. He also is a consultant for Curry-Wille & Associates of Ames, Iowa.
Sponsored by Hancor, Inc. since 1966, the Hancor Soil and Water Engineering Award recognizes noteworthy contributions to the advancement of soil and water engineering. Contributions may be made in different areas, including research, teaching, planning, design, construction, management, or materials development.

ASAE officials presented the Hancor Soil and Water Engineering award on Aug. 4, 2004 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Melvin helped establish and led the Soil, Water and Waste Management Extension engineers throughout Iowa. He significantly advanced the knowledge and technologies involved in understanding and managing soil compaction effects and remediation, animal agriculture effects on the environment, animal waste management and ag drainage.
The American Society of Agricultural Engineers is an educational and scientific organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food, and biological systems. Founded in 1907 and headquartered in St. Joseph, Michigan, ASAE comprises 9,000 members representing more than 100 countries.
